No need for formalities because we need to get straight to it.
Tennis: On Monday, we saw the American John Isner began his match against the Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut. Because the clock was reaching 9 and it was about to get dark, play had been suspended. Moving on to day 2, the match became intense and it was going into the 5th set. Once the inning went into double digits, the crowd knew they were in for a treat. After nearly 7 hours of play in the 5th set, Mahut and Inser retired for the night with a score of something around 59-58 in the 5th. Fast forward to day 3 and Isner won the set with a historic, record-breaking score of 70-68. Although Mahut was the official loser, I believe there were no losers. Sadly, the next day, Isner lost his match in 1 hr and 16 min with a score of 6-0 6-2 6-3. Credit is still given where it's due because NONE OF US could last in an 11 hour match.
The World Cup: The 4 year defending champions Italy lost as well as New Zealand. Of course this didn't affect many people as much as the devastating collapse of the United States. The boys dressed in red, white, and blue suffered a crippling loss to Ghana with a score of 1:2 although superstar Landon Donovan pulled all of the stops to bring his team back from the abyss. Germany destroyed Britain with a score of 4:1 and Argentina defeated Mexico with a score of 3:1. The Round of 16 is nearly complete and then we move on to the Quarterfinals.
Baseball: Friday night, Diamondbacks pitcher Edwin Jackson threw a no hitter to win the game 1-0 against the Rays. I was ecstatic as I watched him throw nearly 150 pitches and then receive the warm welcome from his team.
As previously mentioned, this weekend was the meeting between The Dodgers and The Yankees. Tensions were thick as players tried to remember what they were playing for while remembering the good times they had with Joe. The Yankees won on Friday with a score of 2-1. Saturday, Derek Jeter's 36th birthday, the Yankees couldn't muster up anything with AJ Burnett on the mound. Therefore, they lost 9-4. Sunday, with the Dodgers scoring early with a 4-0 lead, Pettitte was taken out. After a comeback rally from A-Rod and more rallies in the bottom of the 9th, the Yankees would tie up the game 6-6. Going into the 10th, it would be the hot Yankee hitter Rockin Robbie Cano that would give the Yankees an 8-6 lead.
Phew, all caught up with reading this tidbit? Well let's just wrap this up by saying that Mariano "The Sandman" Rivera came on and closed one hell of a game. The Yankees can go back to NY with a 2/3 game win and with the memories of reuniting with Joe.
Also, congrats to the NY Mets who won today's game 6-0 against the Twins. The Mets are rocking and rolling and finally bringing the heat during the games. Keep up the good work guys because I would like to continue to clap and secretly cheer for you.
Entertainment: The BET Awards were tonight and like always there were ups and downs. Two of the biggest ups for me were the Michael Jackson tribute performed by Chris Brown and the Purple Rain tribute to Prince as performed by Patti LaBelle. Both artists channeled their inner divas/dons and tore the roof off of that sucka! Is is safe to say that Chris Brown's career has been given a second chance? Ummm, yes! Chris I'm proud of you for patiently waiting and succeeding!
Well there you have it folks, a recap of what was seemingly heart pounding and adrenaline pumping in sports this week/weekend. This week starts Free Agency week so let's see what it brings.
XOXO,
Whitney
